Midwest U.S. Industrial Sector GHG Emission Trends by State: 1990-2007

Industrial energy use is the third largest GHG-emitting sector in the Midwest, accounting for 13 percent of total regional emissions in 2007.

Midwest industrial sector emissions declined overall between 1990 and 2007. The greatest industrial sector emission declines--some 4-5 times greater than the national decline over this time period (approximately 6 percent)--occurred in Ohio and Michigan (24 percent and 32 percent, respectively). Meanwhile, industrial emissions in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin increased during this period by 23, 22, 19 and 7 percent, respectively, countering national and regional trends.

Region-wide, emissions were relatively stable through the 1990s until 1999, when sector emissions began to decline.
