Estimates for feasible near-term and mid-term portfolio of new renewable electric power in the U.S. Southeast

Over the next 6 to 12 years, the Southeast (defined here as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia) can deploy existing, cost-effective renewable power technologies to meet more than 20 percent of its projected electricity needs. As more projects come online through 2025, the renewable electric power generation in the region could exceed 30 percent of total electric power production. To achieve the region’s renewable power potential, the author's estimates suggest that Southeast states can draw on a portfolio of regional energy resources.
